The six Kyambogo University students that were arrested on Monday 4th July for spearheading the protest against surcharges were yesterday 6th July released on bond.
This means that they were temporarily released until the police completes it’s investigations and findings.
The released students are said to be supporters of NUP and include Nalubanga Hanifa Kasim – the GRC private Students, Kakungulu Samuel belonging to KAKS media, Obiara Ben, Akis Benjamin and two others.
They had been taken into police custody on Monday 4th July after they attempted to begin a strike as they were protesting against surcharges that are charged to students who have not paid tuition payments within the first six weeks of the semester.
All they hoped for was that the six weeks would instead be pushed to eight weeks especially during these difficult economic times in the country.
The Guild Speaker has through a letter communicated about the general assembly that will be held tomorrow Friday 8th July 2022 to further discuss the issue of surcharges that these student heroes were protesting against and other issues such as the extention of the semester and missing marks.
The general assembly is regarded as a peaceful means for the students to express their concerns rather than resort to chaotic demonstrations that result into negative consequences for everyone.
