In response to growing concerns from student leaders about a recent tuition fee increase, Kyambogo University Vice Chancellor, Professor Eli Katunguka, has issued a statement addressing the issue and clarifying the university’s stance.
The memo, dated July 25, 2024, was prompted by a letter from the Guild President, H.E. Mwebesa Reagan, dated July 23, 2024. The Guild President’s letter voiced the student body’s dissatisfaction with the fee hike and the alleged lack of consultation.
Professor Katunguka explained that the tuition fee changes were part of a broader review of university programmes and the introduction of new ones.
“Faculties and Schools proposed a moderate increase in tuition fees, which was thoroughly discussed and approved by the University Council during a meeting held on April 27, 2023,” he stated.
He emphasized that the changes were moderate and only affected specific faculties, such as the School of Management and Entrepreneurship and the Built Environment.
The Vice Chancellor highlighted that the effective date for the fee changes was set for the 2024/2025 academic year, and only incoming first-year students would be affected.
Continuing students would not see any changes in their tuition fees. He reassured all students that this decision was made transparently, with student representatives, including the Guild President, present during the Council and Senate meetings where the proposals were discussed and approved.
“I encourage student leaders to engage management to find a lasting solution to any issues affecting students’ welfare,” he wrote. He assured the student body that all necessary measures would be taken to ensure that teaching and learning continue uninterrupted.
The Vice Chancellor concluded his response by expressing a commitment to maintaining peace and stability on campus, ensuring that the core function of teaching and learning remains undisturbed.
