Kyambogo University has dismissed its Guild President, Akiso Benjamin, over serious disciplinary violations, marking a dramatic turn in student leadership at one of Uganda’s top public universities.
In a letter dated July 3, 2025, signed by Vice Chancellor Prof. Eli Katunguka-Rwakishaya, the university announced Akiso’s immediate dismissal following findings by the Students’ Affairs and Welfare Committee, which concluded that he breached university regulations on multiple counts.
The offenses include:
- Breach of peace – Contrary to Regulation 20(a) of the Kyambogo University Students’ Regulations (2003, as amended in 2016).
- Mounting of roadblocks – In violation of Regulation 19(b).
- Insubordination to university authority – As per Regulations 18 and 15(c).
The disciplinary case was heard in person, and the committee found Akiso culpable on all charges. The matter was tabled before the University Council at its 111th meeting on June 27, 2025, where the Council upheld the recommendation to dismiss him under Regulations 37(m) and 41 of the Students’ Regulations.
“You breached peace, mounted roadblocks, and were insubordinate to the University authority,” the Council’s resolution stated.

The ruling effectively removes Akiso from all academic and extracurricular participation, and bars him from using university facilities or representing the Students’ Guild or Kyambogo University in any form.
