Today, 2nd September 2022, the Vice Chancellor of Kyambogo University Prof. Eli Katugunka together with the Director of ICT Dr. John Okonzi addressed the press about the current state of the University and ICT.
This was through a conference held in the University Council Room.
Prof. Eli Katunguka zeroed his focus on the issue of examination malpractice as he alleged that many students tend to believe that cheating examinations is okay until they are caught.
This follows the fact that examinations are expected to begin on Monday 5th September 2022.
“Some students refuse to carry either a national identity card or Student identity card to the examination room because they want to impersonate and carry out other examination malpractice kinds without being identified. However, whoever won’t have an identity card will not be allowed into the examination room,” the Vice Chancellor stressed.
“We plan to install CCTV cameras in larger examination rooms to capture those students who chew evidence in form of chits after they have been caught cheating,” the Director of ICT added.
Still regarding the issue of examinations, the Vice Chancellor emphasized that students who have not cleared all dues up to zero balance will not be allowed to sit examinations.
“Some students share their examination cards with those who have not cleared tuition dues who end up photocopying and forging out examination permits. However, that will no longer be effective or helpful for we have advanced in ICT and examination supervisors will be given gadgets to scan the examination permits to differentiate fake from original,” Dr. John Okonzi remarked.
He said that the ACMIS (Academic Management Information Systems) which helps with admissions, student enrollment and registration, payment and production of academic documents has been advanced and fake examination permits will be identified.
“Examination cards have QR codes which can easily be linked to the student’s portal information. Students with fake cards will definitely be caught.”
While addressing the issue regarding surcharges reflecting on students’ portals after payment has been made, Dr. John Okonzi said that the 50,000 shillings late payment fee also affects the students who register late even if they made payments earlier than the date from which the surcharge took effect.
“It’s not the faulty system, it’s just the late registration policy.” he reassured.
Therefore, students whose portals show the surcharge should pay it such that they may be able to print out examination cards.
“Kyambogo University is the centre of excellence in ICT. That is why we intend to share our ICT capacity with other universities, seeing how the ACMIS has been successfully implemented and shared.”
Graduation is set to begin on 7th December and end on 9th December 2022.
Prior to this, the appointed Chancellor Prof. John Okedi will have to be installed by H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in a ceremony that will take place on 9th November 2022. This will make him eligible for signing and issuing out degrees to the December graduands.
