Kyambogo University is holding its guild elections today, 11th March 2021. The electoral process that started at the start of last year (2020), got shortfalls with the sudden worldly coronavirus pandemic that forced everyone into a lockdown in March 2020.
The candidates had reached the final phase of the campaigns and all the moods were high at the Banda-based University. The lockdown however left many candidates with the only choice of online campaigns on social media. Amongst those active on social media was Mbaziira John and Mugisha Trust Nduwayo, the two top contenders, keep their timelines active.
As you hear this, a glimpse of the ballot paper reveals Mbaziira John without any photo on his ballot paper. This is believed to be the same for all candidates that stood behind the people power camp.
Earlier into the campaigns last year, the University administration instructed the institution’s electoral commission to remove every photo on the ballot papers that had a red beret on it. This was reaffirmed at the resumption of the campaigns when the University reopened for continuing students.
According to supporters of Mbaziira John and people power, they believe that this was done to make sure that all the people power candidates lose.
According to Mbaziira John, “the University administration is not acting according to the University constitution. They are just looking for excuses to fail us but the Kyambogo students know what we stand for, a policy-based leadership.”
When asked if he is afraid that this will affect his votes, Mbaziira says that he is not afraid. “I know there could be some who might get misguided but our support is too overwhelming to scare us.”
Among other candidates appearing on today’s ballot is Mugisha Trust Nduwayo of FDC Tayebwa Jonathan of NRM, Kigaye Collin (Independent), Ssubi Julius Ceaser (Independent), Onai Emmanuel Peter, Mugeni Sharifu (Independent) and Markmort Daniel who later joined Mbaziira John sr.
The Guild representative elections are set to be on the 12th this month.
