In the first ordinary GRC sitting held on Friday 29th March, Hon. Kidega Brian, the newly elected Guild Representative Councillor for Private Students was successfully voted by the GRC house to become the 16th Guild Speaker of Kyambogo University. This took place after the swearing-in of all the GRCs and Hall Chairpersons for the year 2019/2020.
The race for Guild Speakership attracted four GRC’s, who were nominated by fellow GRC’s in the house. The other three candidates apart from Hon. Kidega Brian who took part in the race included Hon. Ddembe Victor, Hon. Ochola and Hon. Nyesiga Seth who was nominated while in custody at Jinja road police station after his arrest by the police during Thursday’s protest.
Kidega Brian won the election with 35 votes, only 9 votes behind Ddembe Victor who had 26 votes. Nyesiga Seth came third with 12 votes and Ochola had 9 votes.
The Deputy Guild Speakership which attracted 3 female candidates was also tightly contested with Nasasira Janet winning the election with 46 votes while Ayebare Edith followed with 26 votes. Atuhaire Sharon came in third with 9 votes.
The Speaker and Deputy Speaker were immediately sworn in and handed the instruments of power to preside over the Guild Council.
Kidega Brian is known by many to be an orator and this has been an attributing factor to his success as GRC and Deputy Speaker.
