Its been a few days since the attack on a University in Garrissa, Kenya where 147 innocent Christians were killed (Rest In Peace) after the US had given the country a terror alert but because of the slow nature of Africans, Garissa happened.
The same US offered a terror alert to Uganda, that the Al-Shabaab militants are plotting to carry out an attack on an education institution in Uganda, Preferably a University. Although it’s not yet known which University will be attacked, Uganda Intelligence Personnel and the police plus the army were quick to respond and tight security was the order of the day, that was two-three days ago.
You couldn’t pass by the MUK gate without producing a student ID, people were told to get out of their cars for maximum checking like its done at the airport.
Unfortunately, three days on, the security is lax, you no-longer have to present any identification to be allowed into the university, cars are being checked the normal way, like we ain’t under attack….as of Monday, there was just one police officer at the main gate, he would just peep into cars, without opening them or asking those inside to come out for a thorough security check and that poses the question, ARE WE SAFE?
We talked to a few students and this is what they had to say;
Joan- “Today’s security is a mere joke, after a few days, the government is becoming lax, I bet this is what the Al-Shabaab are also waiting for.”
Douglas- “I might not even attend lectures tomorrow, with such security, I dont think I am safe, my bed is even more safe.”
Julius- “The way I see things 7/11 might happen again, we are not safe, I repeat, we are not safe.”
If we can’t feel safe in the capital city, what of those students in the outskirts of town? The lax manner of security at Makerere is very worrying, 147 is not just a number nor a statistic.
