Uganda Law Council has been urged to quicken the issuance of practicing certificates to lawyers that have graduated from Law Development Center (LDC).
Council Ssewungu Joseph Gonzaga (MP Kalungu West county) said Wednesday during plenary that lawyers should leave LDC and start practicing immediately.
Ssewungu said Uganda Law Council is too slow at issuing practicing certificates to lawyers and as a result they (lawyers) are being arrested in courts of law as masqueraders because they lack practicing certificates.
Ssewungu further called for the amendment of the Advocates Act to formulate a body that will quickly vet and issue practicing certificates to lawyers.
The deputy Attorney general Kafuuzi Karugaba Jackson attributed the delay to the overwhelming graduates from the law development center.
Kafuuzi said the law council sits once a month and only vets about 150 graduates per seating. He, however, said there is no need for amendment of the Advocates Act because a new vetting body may lead to issuance of certificates to undeserving lawyers.
For one to be a practicing lawyer, s/he is required to do a diploma in legal practice and thereafter acquire a practicing license from the Uganda Law Council.
