A few metres away from Makerere university lies the proverbial “Bar” in the speak of legal literati. Sitting Along Gaddafi road, Law Development Centre is the only institution in Uganda where lawyers undergo a post graduate diploma in law also known as the bar course.
On Saturday 13th Feb, LDC was the point of conversion of Uganda law schools. Over 7 law school teams were expected, just three turned up for what would be a three pronged battle of Jessup: Uganda Christian University, Makerere university and the host team select from LDC.
JESSUP moot is the most prestigious moot competition on the globe, attracting only the finest national representatives on the global legal moot platform.
Moots are a form of quasi court proceedings where law students hold mock court sessions and articulate arguments before a panel of judges over a hypothetical problem.
This years Jessup organiser, a man who participated in the moots in his hey-days was Roland Mwene Yongyera.
Four judges were flown in; Godiva Akullo, Susan Akullo, Angella Nantongo and Alex Ssali to judge the briefs.
The hypothetical problem basically dealt with illegal acquisition of information from nationals and diplomats, the crime of espionage, pre-trial detention, admissibility of evidence before the ICJ, cyber attacks and cyber warfare and its position in international law and internationally wrongful acts.
The 57th nationals rounds of Jessup was won by LDC. Kicking off at 8am till 7pm, the 10-hour-long exercise was quite gruesome.
The quite successful event was dotted with moments of brilliance with teams making legal briefs (memorials) as applicants and thereafter as respondents.
Last year’s winners Makerere university (who had the best memorials) were given a run for their money. UCU were the first runners up, while Makerere university (represented by Simon Ssenyonga, Judith Aboto, Julliana Kisakye) took up the 3rd spot.
The LDC winning team was made up of Edline Mulungi, Lastone Gulume and another only identified as Enyimu. Congratulations to them.
