Law Development Center (LDC) has once again grabbed the attention of the public due to financial and sexual exploitation allegations.
LDC administrators were covered in sweat on October 12 as the Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee tasked them to answer to disturbing allegations of financial and sexual exploitation from students.
Robina Gureme Rwakooja, the committee’s chairperson noted that LDC had hiked tuition, turned militant with some of the staff ridiculing and asking for money and sex in order to help students pass.
“There are rampant cases that some professional advisors and other officials solicit for sex from students to help them pass,” she said.
Asuman Basalirwa, MP Bugiri Municipality tasked LDC to comment about the allegations of money and sex for marks, saying they are yet to receive evidence from students.
“There were also concerns brought to this Committee of sexually transmitted marks and also monetary transmitted marks. People are paying to get admission at LDC in terms of money and sex. Those of us who have gone through that institution, that isn’t information we want to hear. Those are issues at your level as administrators you may not know but we have asked our sources to bring us information which we will bring to you,” he said.
In defence, Annette Karungi, Head Bar Course trashed the allegations and asked the committee for more time before she could respond to allegations of sexual exploitation.
“We had a meeting with the Director and we prepared a detailed written response, many of the issues that were highlighted are indeed grave, they are extremely unfortunate but we haven’t had an opportunity to be able to respond to them in detail. I am of the humble opinion that because of the gravity of the allegations, it will only be fair to give us an opportunity to respond to them in detail,” Karungi said.
LDC has previously been castigated by students over the 20% tuition increment that was introduced last month, ‘failing’ and sexually harassing students.
