Many may not believe that once, the highly dreaded Law Development Centre (LDC) did not exist, and about 50 years ago, that was the case.
LDC will be marking 50 years of existence in 2020 next year after it was established in 1970 as an institution to provide legal education to lawyers. Today, the Centre provides that education to even non-lawyers.
From the website of LDC, it is mandated to also among others, undertake research in topical issues, contribute to legal reform, produce legal publications, teaching material and law reports.
The Centre has released a communiqué which has been circulated through WhatsApp about what should be expected that year.
“The Steering Committee for ‘LDC@50’ resolved that, as part of the commemoration of LDC@50, each of the LDC Alumni Academic Years – Bar Course, Diploma in Law and Diploma in Human Rights – spearheads and organizes ONE activity/event/project of their choice,” reads the message.
Lawyers from the different graduating years have been asked to plan and organise an activity, event or project that they will present to mark the 50 years. What they plan may even extend much into the year and beyond.
LDC will use the whole year to commemorate its existence (January to December 2020).
Representatives from the various years are required to contact the director LDC regarding any plans they intend to make.
