Police have arrested a lifeguard following the suspected drowning of a student at Seeta High School’s Mbalala campus in Mukono District.
Kato Diriisa, the school’s designated swimming pool lifesaver, was taken into custody after the death of student Nsamba Kevin on August 3, 2025, around 5:30 PM.
Regional police responded to the scene, interviewed witnesses, reviewed CCTV footage, and retrieved the body. A postmortem examination has since been completed.
“We plan to take him to court pending guidance from the Director of Public Prosecutions,” said ACP Kituuma Rusoke, the Police Public Relations Officer.
‘Supervision Wasn’t Enough’
ACP Rusoke said the tragedy highlighted urgent safety lessons for schools operating swimming pools. He stressed that relying solely on lifeguards was not enough — especially when they also acted as coaches, splitting their attention.
Authorities are now urging schools to ensure lifeguards are properly trained and officially appointed, and to enforce strict protocols for pool use to prevent overcrowding and lapses in oversight.
The investigation is ongoing.
