Lira University has dedicated 20 hectares of land to cocoa farming as part of a broader effort to enhance agricultural productivity in northern Uganda.
During a Public Lecture on September 26, 2024, Dr. Laury Ocen, Senior Lecturer, announced the establishment of a Cocoa Research Centre aimed at educating farmers, conducting research, and promoting sustainable cocoa production.
Dr. Ocen credited Vice Chancellor Prof. Jasper Ogwal Okeng for spearheading the initiative and offering additional land to expand the project.
The centre seeks to transform the local economy by embracing perennial crops like cocoa, with Dr. Ocen urging farmers to capitalize on this economic opportunity.
The University plans to collaborate with research institutions and local communities, integrating traditional collective farming methods with modern agricultural practices.
