The Higher Education Students’ Financing Board has released 1,276 names of students to benefit from this year’s government loan scheme to institutions of higher learning.
The loans were awarded to students admitted for the Undergraduates and Diplomas in various institutions of Higher learning in Uganda.
Out of 15 universities and 33 tertiary institutions considered for the loan scheme, Kyambogo University takes the lead with more beneficiaries totaling to 214 followed by Kampala International University with 200 students while Makerere University has 173 slots.
The board chairman, Prof Callisto Locheng, said that the number of applicants had doubled from last year’s 2,125 to 4,657.
He says all districts were applicants except for Amudat, Kabong, Kotido and Moroto.
The Minister for Education, Jesicca Alupo, said though they received 4657 applications from student only 1276 have been able to go through because they met all the requirements.
Alupo adds that a total of 4035 are girls, a sign she says that government is ready to promote girls education.
According to education minister, Jessica Alupo the President has promised to increase funding to reduce inequality and fight poverty.
The lists for the undergraduates and diploma Students have been released to Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions participating in this year’s exercise.
All the successful applicants are required to report for studies immediately upon notification at the respective Higher Learning Institutions;
