Kyambogo University (KYU) Council, at its meeting on 27th April 2023, approved a total of 30 new academic programmes (courses) ranging from Bachelor’s to Doctoral Degree levels.
The University’s Vice Chancellor, Prof Eli Katunguka, in his explanation revealed that they (KYU) are shifting concentration to degree programmes.
“We completely stopped admitting students for certificate programmes and now started refining the diplomas. We shall progressively omit the diplomas and put more emphasis on degrees, Master’s, and PhDs,” Katunguka said.
In a similar development, the University scrapped off a significant number of diploma and certificate programmes, with the aim of creating more room for higher qualification programmes.
Out of the previous 52 diploma programmes, the University phased out 27, shelved eight (8) programmes, and retained 17 diploma programmes. Some of the retained diploma programmes include Diploma in Pre-Primary Education (DPPE), Diploma in Fashion and Apparel Design (DFD), Diploma in Biomedical Engineering, Diploma in Refrigeration/Air Conditioning, Diploma in Water Engineering among others.
Diploma in Primary and Secondary Education is one of the diploma programmes that were phased out.
Planning to switch back to the annual two-semester calendar, Kyambogo currently runs a three-semester program due to the changes that happened in post COVID-19 pandemic where an extra cohort of students were admitted after government’s proposal. This was due to the absence of learners for A-level amid the pandemic in 2020.
