Live bullets and teargas were the order of the fateful Sunday 15th March as the Kyambogo University’s 2020 guild aspirants held their final campaigns.
Camps crashed and heckled as police intervened with teargas and live bullets. There are over five students currently nursing injuries at the medical center. Source tell us that there is student who has lost an eye but the chaos could not allow us to confirm this allegation.
Scores of students were arrested and are currently under police custody.
According to Jonathan Tundulu, the current Kyambogo guild president and John Mbaziira, the people power flag bearer, elections have been postponed to Thursday 19th March.
“The postponement has come up with out any explanation and all candidates are still engaging authorities to know the reason for the postponement.” Said Mbaziira.
However according to the letter dated 15th March from Vice Chancellor’s office, ‘some guild candidates and guild representatives have failed to present their photos without their party emblems’ which he says abrogates the Electoral Commission regulations of the University.
“They are not going to stop our resolve no matter the intimidation. Museveni and his Kyambogo administration should know that Kyambogo has decided.” Said Mbaziira after one attack.
“They have been postponing elections in order to favor some candidates but we have been able to foil all their plans.”
The Uganda police force deployed heavily and was able to calm the situation, however the camps abandoned the university premises and took their campaigns in Banda town where noise took verge.
It should be remembered that the Kyambogo University 2020 guild Election Day had been earlier postponed to Tuesday 17th March 2020 to which the dean of students banned any party emblem from appearing on the ballot.
