The issue of IDs for first year students in Makerere University has more less become a daily talk ever since the swearing in of the 83rd Guild. Threats of striking from some individuals, and a few cabinet ministers have constantly not yielded anything – most probably because the most influential student in the university: the guild president, H.E Kato Paul, has always preferred dialogue regarding the issue.
However, a univocal letter he has addressed to The Academic Registrar, dated 23rd May 2017, could spark a dramatic twist to events. KP says,
“However we have come to a time when we are tired of mediating with no results. We have played devil’s advocate in the face of the students’ body hoping that you don’t take our patience for granted, upto yesterday when you assured me that there would be issuance of IDs today and I communicated to the students about the same and still nothing has been done.” He explained.
Controversially, he gave a conclusion to his letter,
“I therefore write to you sir informing you that we shall not embrace boardroom engagements on this issue of IDs anymore, but rather an industrial action must be taken.”
Deputy VC responds
The university’s deputy vice chancellor Barnabas Nawangwe revealed the news this morning and pleaded students to remain calm as they wait, “Dear Gallant Makerereans! I salute you the cream of our society, the mighty brains of Africa. I wish to inform you that we have now resolved the issue of IDs which were delayed because of the Government CEMAS project which failed to take off in time. The AR will begin issuing IDs immediately. Please stay calm and concentrate on your studies. God bless you!. The exact time when these IDs will be issued remains unknown yet the semester is coming to an end.
The Bee, will be buzzing with ears all over, bringing you all developments.
