Just two days after students of Michell hall at Makerere University protested what they termed as poor quality meals, Lumumba hall has also followed the suit.
students who were meant to turn up for supper gathered around the serving point while carrying tree branches and chanting the infamous weewe slang to signify a strike.
“Hide my friend, Hide! They are looking for you. They want to beat you!” Muna,” a cook at Finaland Bar and restaurant shouted to a colleague who sprinted for safety at around 7:30pm.
HOW IT HAPPENED
At around 7:30pm, Lumumba went to the serving point in Mary Stuart and poured all the food. The strike was led by strike Gurus like GRC School of education, Simon Wanyera, and the Lumumba chairman, ’emperor’ Kamanah
Wanyera went ahead to pour food on the manager of the restaurant before the other students broke plates and saucepans.
“Maybe these students needed to be heard but people like Wanyera had a good relationship with the Kitchen. I am appalled he even fought him. The Kitchen fed his supporters during the campaigns and has continued to be on friendly terms. He went too far,” a source from the Kitchen revealed.
Another student who preferred to remain anonymous said: “The food is very bad and little. We deserve our money’s worth.”
MARY STUART GIRLS JOIN
As the boys tussled it out with the cooks, the strike was soon joined Mary Stuart residents who seemed to have been habouring the grief for long.
“The ladies serving the food have wrong attitude, you ask for just a little more soup and she ignores you or shouts at you amidst the line. Meanwhile you have paid for that food. I want to beat that woman. They thought they are in charge, let me see what they have to say now,” said Lillian Kembabazi, a Mary stuart resident.
POLICE INTERVENES
Soon Policemen led by Jackson Muchunguzi joined in to settle the wrangle. Some students splintered immediately at the sound of police sirens while others stayed. Mucunguzi promised the students that their issue would be sorted immediately.
The manager of the restaurant handled the situation by talking to the angry students hearing them out and promising better meals.
“The beans were old. But we apologize and are going to endeavor to give you better,” the manager said.
However, the students finally demanded for fresh supper which was provided to them at around 11pm
This is the first time Finaland Bar and Restaurant which cooks for Lumumba, Mary Stuart and Complex Halls is faced with a strike over bad meals since 2014.
