Students of Makerere University from the college of health sciences turned up at the Makerere main pitch last Sunday to take part in this year’s annual sports Gala. The gala featured games like volleyball, football, chess, scrabble among others.
The event’s activities were spearheaded by Byamugisha Joseph and the university’s sports minister Micah Muhangi as they shouldered the heaviest burden to see the event start in time and move on flawlessly.
Some of the names that dominated scrabble include; Jeremiah Kwesiga Mutinye, Ronald Olum, Ategeka Amanda Theresa and Acan Innocent Immaculate who tussled it out to alongside their fellow medical students.
Logophile Ronald Olum, a third year medical student managed to top his fellow scrabble fanatics after defeating Acan, a fifth year student.
Speaking of chess, the fifth year students managed to obtain victory after hammering year 1’s in a thrilling final game.
The day’s favorite game; Football had 8 teams seeded in two groups of 4 teams each. Group A had Year two leading the log with seven points followed by Pharmacy, Fifth year and Biomedical Engineering class.
Year four took maximum points from their opponents to lead group B. Year 3’s under the stewardship of GRC Aleper Solomon, Jude, Okello Innocent and Stuart needed a miraculous last minute gasp winner in a waterlogged pitch after a heavy downpour to sink the freshmen of year one.
Despite having a controversial final, year four’s managed to win the gala after a penalty shootout with second year’s. As winners of the day, the fourth year medical students walked away with a bull.
Year II’s, the losers petitioned to the organizing committee requesting a re-penalty shootout with the victors as they emphasize that the penalty was saved.
Awuche Midari, a second year radiography student argued that the referee’s decision to allow a penalty that had been saved by goal keeper disrespects the honor of the annual gala and the participating teams.
