Makerere university students doing a bachelor’s of Development Studies from the School of Liberal and Performing Arts held hostage their principal at the college of humanities and social sciences, Professor Edward Kirumira demanding an explanation as to why the university decided to scrap off their course.
The over 1300 students led by the outgoing Vice Guild President Nyamutooro Phionah, who is a third year student of the same course, stormed the principal’s office and forced him to follow them at the university senate building where they petitioned academic registrar, Alfred Masikye Namoah on behalf of the university senate which is the highest academic decision-making body.
In a 6 page document the students want the senate to reverse their decision noting that their course should remain as a fully-fledged degree program since there is no justifiable reason as to why it is being scrapped off.
This follows the 151st meeting of the university Senate held on 17th September 2014 which agreed among others, to review all academic programs in the university with a review to restructure some.
The students say the senate did not adduce any evidence showing that their course is irrelevant or lacks economic viability as it is stated in their recommendation report.
