On Sunday morning, Dick Rodgers the FDC guild candidate and president MUK FDC chapter woke up to a phone call informing him of his mother’s demise. Mrs Zeldah Tumuhairwe was a 69-year-old midwife who retired in 2006 but has been tirelessly battling with blood pressure. A few years ago, she got a bacterial infection that threatened her life but with the love of the creator, she regained her strength again.
On Sunday morning at 3am, she started feeling hardships in breathing and woke her husband up for help. Since he knew her problem, he immediately got her into the car trying to rush her to the nearest hospital for first aid and treatment. Unfortunately, this dear one’s life did not go beyond the garage as she took her last breath before the car engine could even be ignited. That’s how Dick Rodgers, one of the 12 candidates vying for the post of guild president at Makerere University, lost his mum in just a period of 10 minutes.
Who was Mrs Zeldah Tumuhairwe?
She was a caring and determined mother. “I must admit I was too much in love with her” Dick Rodgers told Campusbee during phone interview.
She tried to make the lives of her children better. What they remember most about her is her caution to them not to over trust people for not all of them stand for honesty.
How influential was she in Dick’s political life?
She has been a strong engine for Dick politically since his primary life. While at Makobole Primary School, she advised him to stand for head boy a post he won and became a leader at that tender age.
While in high school at Rukungiri Central, she reminded him of the great leader he was and he stood again. Successfully, he became Head Prefect again.
In this current guild race, Dick recalls his mother’s words saying..
“Try, you never know what may come out,” and that’s when his political journey began at Makerere as a guild aspirant. She really nurtured him politically.
“It’s so absurd that my mother has not lived to receive my annual International Women’s day gift. But I am strong and I appreciate my supporters’, friends and fellow guild aspirants for staying with me spiritually during this trying moment. I also kindly apologize for not making it to the platform on Sunday and Monday for it was not out of my own making. Despite my Mother’s loss, I am still strong and firm just like all other leaders be. I promise all my supporters and FDC members that i surely will not disappoint them. God bless you.”
A moment of silence as we feel at heart with our fellow student and guild aspirant. May the soul of his mother Rest In Peace
