With the numerous construction projects going on around MAK, some structures have fallen victim to these new developments. The Most significant case in point is the former university guild canteen that’s has been operating near senate on MAK university road. The canteen is being demolished to create leisure park and car parking space for the under construction Mega Complex.
Jesh Functional services the former tenants who have run the canteen for 5 years say they were notified one and a half months ago to wrap up their services at the canteen. They (Jesh) Functional services has currently relocated to the Senior staff canteen next to the Swimming pool.
The Jesh management confirmed the developments of the canteen services being put on halt and added that MUASSA is planning to have the canteen on another location.
“Our new location just like the other is also under MUASSA and we are happy for its big space. We are currently doing some renovations which are being supervised by the Estates Department however, our guild canteen contract still had three years to run so we are anxiously waiting for the new guild canteen” said Mrs Jane Nuwasasira the C.E.O Jesh Functional services.
The new canteen whose name is to be decided yet is open to the general public be it students or lecturers and Jesh pledges all its former clients to embrace the new place without any price changes.
Jotham Burobuto the Acting Guild President while contacted about the issue said that as development it is an appreciated fact and so is the demolition since it’s for the better of the mega complex. He added that this Mega complex is to house laboratories, research centers, lecture rooms and an assured hall that will house the Guild Canteen.
The guild canteen contributes a certain percentage to the Guild Fees according to the terms behind its operation. The Current guild was this notified by the VC Prof Ddumba about the demolition of the former location and assured of a new and better hall once the construction of The Mega Complex is done. The onus of who will run it again still remains on the administration.
