Tears, joy, dissappointments and relief are the words that could describe the mood in the guild house in the morning of Saturday 3rd February, 2018 at around 1am when the guild house voted for a committee to man the forthcoming guild presidential and GRC elections at Uganda’s premier university.
The Makerere Electoral Commission is a student body patronised by the office of the Dean of Students to handle students’ elections in the university.
With a difference of 15 votes, Peter Makumbi claimed his victory away from his closest rival and former guild Speaker aspirant Yosam Bagumirabingi who polled 32 votes compared to the former’s 47 votes.
The guild constitution calls for election of a new president within 50 days from the start of the semster and as of today, about 14 days have already elapsed.
Makumbi will be assisted by Mary Stuart Hall Chairlady Agnes Abashaba as Vice Chairperson, Rene Ndoyi as the General Secretary, Abraham Mukalazi as the Finance Secretary and Dennis Ssekyaya as the Public Relations Officer.
The commission of five (5) presides over the election of the guild president and Guild Representative Councillors (GRCs) from the various schools and halls of residence.
