The annual Christopher Street Day (CSD) pride celebrations 2023 are scheduled for July 22nd, 2023 in Berlin.

This year’s celebrations are organised under the theme “Be their voice – and ours! …for more empathy and solidarity!”.

Among this year’s attendees and speaker is John Solomon Nabuyanda a third year law student at Makerere University who doubles as a human rights defender.

Nabuyanda will represent Uganda at the July 22nd CSD Berlin pride celebrations. He is also expected to discuss queer rights, democracy and rights of Sexual minorities in Uganda.

Nabuyanda announced on his Twitter page (@citylawyer01) that he was out of the country ahead of the Berlin CSD celebrations. Of course, this announcement didn’t sit well with anti-LGBTGI netizens who trolled him for his rather bold move of announcing his reasons for departure.

In response to his critics, Nabuyanda called them hypocrites who pause to understand more human rights when discussing about rights of sexual minorities yet remain silent when it comes to fossil fuel projects.

“hypocrites negatively pause to understand more human rights when we openly demand for the inclusion of Lgbtqi+ persons and equal rights yet they are silent on fossil fuel projects like eacop Abductions and torture and the persecution of torture victims they remain silent,” he tweeted.

I have arrived safely in the first destination of my tour in 4 European nations where I will be engaging in high levelled discourses concerning the state of Human Rights in Uganda Environmental rights and Eacop including the recently passed Anti Homosexuality Act and its impacts pic.twitter.com/9iBoHE2Glw

The organizers of the CSD Berlin pride celebrations want to promote acceptance and take a stand against the pitting of different marginalized groups against each other. Thousands are expected to attend this year’s celebrations.

History of Christopher Street Day

The Christopher Street Day is held in memory of the Stonewall Riots, the first big uprising of homosexuals against police assaults in New York City on June 27, 1969.

The riots took place in a bar called Stonewall Inn on Christopher Street. The first Christopher Street Day in Berlin took place on June 30, 1979 – “Gay Pride” was the motto under which 450 protestors took to the streets of West Berlin.

The mood during the protests was boisterous and cheerful – no hostilities or even violence against participants were recorded, a marked difference to earlier events. These days, the CSD Parade is a celebration of queer life in Berlin and famous for its party atmosphere
