Omollo Juemah Noel, a 3rd year student of law at Makerere University, has edged his fellow competitors in a tightly contested race to become Uganda’s youth ambassador to the East African Community Secretariat in Arusha, Tanzania.
In the event held at Kampala to select Uganda’s youth ambassodor, Juemah beat off tight competition from Makerere’s Ian Ndamwesiga, Sharlot Natukunda, Judith Aboto as well as UTAMU’s Sarah Owembabazi to emerge the best candidate for the position, replacing the out-going Eyeru Jacob, also from MAK.
Aboto, also a law student, was selected as deputy ambassador. In his acceptance message, Juemah pledged not to disappoint during his term. “As one of the most marginalised group in affairs of state and the most susceptible to danger, being a youth in East Africa is without doubt a testing moment for anyone during their lifetime. I shall work hand in hand with everyone to help and assist restore to normalcy any anomaly, be it a social, economic or political constraint that stands before us. I shall not dine and wine, but devote myself to work. I shall take all responsibilities that come my way with courage.” read part of Juemah’s acceptance message.
The judges for the selection process included Hon. Dan Kidega, speaker of the East African Legislative Assembly; Bobo Odico, Mutoni Doris and Kamau Achege. Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Ruhakana Rugunda crowned the winners and later hosted them to a cocktail.
A youth ambassador to the EAC acts as a steward of the youths in his country towards the EA Community integration and harmonises his national youth program with the Community’s. In pursuance of the above objective, the youth ambassodor is expected to initiate and execute programs that will enable its achievement, besides working to increase awareness among the youth about the EA Community.
