Makerere University is set to construct a disability support unit dedicated to students with special needs as part of its efforts to promote inclusivity in learning spaces.
The unit will be constructed using proceeds from the Makerere Run 2024 which is slated for August 18th, according to Dr. Maggie Kigozi, the chairperson Makerere University Endowment Fund. Kigozi said at a press briefing on Tuesday that the unit will empower the differently-abled students to achieve their full potential.
“By constructing a dedicated disability support unit, we aim to provide these students with the necessary facilities, support services, and accommodations to help them thrive. This unit represents our aspirations of inclusivity, a place where all students can feel valued, supported, and empowered to achieve their full potential,” she said.
Dr. Kigozi noted that ‘in our rapidly evolving world, it is crucial to recognize and appreciate the importance of creating an inclusive and accessible educational environment’, adding that students living with disabilities face unique challenges that can hinder their academic progress.
Vincent Nsamba Lubega, Makerere University’s seating guild president said Makerere University must ensure that every student, regardless of how they are abled, thrives and contributes to the community.
“Makerere University has long been a shining example of excellence in education, shaping the minds and future of countless individuals. However, as we strive to build a brighter future, we must ensure that every student, regardless of any special needs, can thrive and contribute to our community,” Nsamba said.
Grace Nabwami, the vice chairperson Makerere University Disability Students Association, said the differently-abled students face several challenges such as difficulty in accessing study materials and navigating around campus. She said the unit will help address some of these challenges.
“This unit will be a sign of hope and a testament to our commitment to inclusivity. It will provide essential services such as accessible infrastructure, assistive technologies, and tailored support for students with disabilities,” she said.
This year’s Makerere University run (Mak Run) is dedicated to supporting students with special needs. The run’s theme is: Run for students with disabilities. The run, the first of this kind since the outbreak of COVID-19, will be held at Makerere University on August 18th, 2024.
