The salary harmonization committee that was set up by the Makerere University council is ready to present what it found out regarding Makerere staff salary scales. Chaired by Ruhinda North Member of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, the committee has decided to release its findings following various strike threats by Makerere lecturers and other University staff members.
It should be recalled that earlier this week, Makerere University Academic Staff Association (MUASA) wrote to the University Council Chairman threatening to strike on Wednesday following the continued refusal to pay their salary arrears. The angry MUASA also stated that they demand for their salary enhancement in addition to paying their arrears starting from July last year.
According to the Chairperson Makerere University council, Eng. Charles Wana Etyem, the University administration is not ready to solve MUASA problems not until the Salary Harmonization committee reveals its findings.
Through his Facebook page, Makerere University Vice-Chancellor, Prof Barnabas Nawangwe expressed how thankful he was to the University lecturers for calling off their planned strike. Apparently, the two parties are set for a dialogue regarding the lecturers’ problems, “I wish to thank Mak staff for accepting my request to avoid strike at this crucial time. Let us embrace dialogue to solve our problems. Together we will lift Makerere University higher,” Nawangwe posted yesterday.
