Just when we thought the drama at Makerere University was coming to an end after the other side took it a step further by suspending, warning and causing arrests of dissenting voices within the university, a fresh episode is coming up by the look of events. In a totally unpredictable move, Roy Rugumayo – a student of Industrial Psychology at the university has issued a last warning to the vice chancellor as regards the said suspensions.
Rugumayo, the President of the School of Psychology also doubles as the Speaker of the Makerere chapter of the Uganda Young Democrats (UYD) – a youth wing of the Democratic Party.
In a hard biting letter, the student is unapologetic and wastes no time to tell off the vice chancellor.
He asks the university boss to respect the students’ right of expression and reminds him that he is a professor who has nonetheless decided to run the institution as a non-academic.
“You have continuously gone on the side of coercion over consensus in the way your administration proposes, passes and implements policies” Rugumayo raps Prof. Nawangwe in the letter.
He went on to give the university boss an ultimatum of 72 hours to recall all the letters that he termed as “intimidatory”, an ultimatum to which he acknowledged that he shall give no further warning.
He also makes mention of availing a copy of the letter to the Minister of Education and Sports. Rugumayo is a reknown student activist who rose to fame in 2017 when he marched into the city protesting the arrest of Dr. Stella Nyanzi over cyber crimes and abusing the person of the President. He was later on detained at Luzira for over a month while on remand.
Unfortunately for the followers of this development, Rugumayo doesn’t clearly stipulate what action he will take incase his ultimatum is not heeded to.
Efforts to get a comment from him on the above were futile as his known numbers were switched off and couldn’t be accessed.
