All is not well at the Ivory Tower as a number of students on internship have come out to complain about the failure to receive their internship allowances.
This situation has been seen by some of the affected students as a deliberate attempt by the university to frustrate their efforts geared towards receiving the money, as its accounts department keeps asking those who make inquiries to come back the following day. Kayondo Latima, a 3rd year law student says he feels deliberately frustrated as all his attempts to get his internship allowance have come to nought yet his colleagues from the same faculty received their allowances.
Some of the messages affected students continue to post on social media include the following
An official in the accounts department who spoke to us on condition of anonymity says the affected students probably handed in wrong accounts hence the delay to receive their allowances. However, Timothy Osilo, a Kenyan student offering a Bachelor of Arts says it is not true for his case since he verified his account months ago. He says he feels discriminated against as a foreigner.
Shortly after the president’s visit to the University in late May, rumours sprouted alleging that some of the students’ internship allowances had been diverted to finance His Excellency’s visit but Makerere University’s Guild Pesident came out and rubbished these claims as baseless conclusions.
