When the Mulago Cancer machine broke down back in April, every Ugandan had their talk about what should be done, a few organizations walked the talk of which MAK based Samaritan Cancer Awareness Association was among.
Led by Timothy Nyanzi and Aguti Faith Mercy both Zoology students, these two decided to start this after loosing a college mate, the late David Wairama to Prostrate cancer.
Coupled with the Crack down at The Mulago Cancer Institute back then, they believed forming this association would help create a cancer free society through public awareness.
With over 50 members hailing from the faculties of Science, Law, Humanities, Medicine and Forestry, in the near future they all intend to spear head the move for the government to formulate favorable Cancer Policies.
As part of the duties it set out to Make the public aware, the association visited the Mulago cancer Ward on 25th July to get the real ground picture at the cancer institute. They also extended support to cancer patients which helped them understand their trials and tribulations.
Their first official project for this association is to help 33 year old Agnes Naiga a mother of two to have a successful operation in India.
Agnes is a Breast Cancer patient whom the association pick pointed from a certain TV program and have offered to help her raise the money she needs for her operation .
Her right Breast has been amputated already,the left one is to be amputated too this weekend all thanks to these to the generous contributions. Agnes will after this be in need of 140 million shillings for a postmortem operation in India that will set her Cancer free.
She so far has 40m, In September, a launch for the association will be held and a car wash conducted to raise the remaining 100m.
“I’ve got concerned ever since I joined the association. It motivated me to research on cancer and get fully aware of it. I’ve also been motivated to help people in need after realizing that more people are suffering in the cancer ward”
