As student leaders were in peace talks with the vice chancellor, Prof John Ddumba-Ssentamu, some students who were striking ended up stoning one of their own.
Makerere students who mastered the striking art were alleging that the tear gas vehicles were empty and that’s why since 8am no tear gas or water had been sprayed at them. This forced them to confront police by throwing stones at them and in the processe, stray stones hit Brian Katana, a fourth year law student.
Katana is a Mitchel hall resident and the chairman Makerere FDC chapter. After the stoning, Katana became unconscious and was whisked away in a police truck to The University hospital.
“We highly condemn this kind of indiscipline where students were stoning at police officers and ended up injuring their fellow student. we have tried to contain the situation and we are still here to ensure that calm is restored,” said Frank Mwesigwa, the Kampala metropolitan commissioner of police.
The student is reported to be slightly out of danger and undergoing treatment at Mulago referral hospital where was referred.
