A few weeks back, this website broke the news of the impending closure of Makerere University’s Fort Portal Campus due to financial crisis, low student enrollment & still competition at the branch. Consequently, more than 250 students from the campus are planning on slapping a law suit on Makerere University over the planned closure of the Campus.
The students claim that they made contracts to study and complete the three years from the Fort Portal campus and not Kampala or Jinja. They further stress that Makerere administrators took the decision of closing the campus without consulting them which they deem unfair.
The campus which was established to serve students from the districts of Kibaale, Ibanda, Hoima, Bundibugyo, Bushenyi, Kasese, Kyenjojo, Kamwenge and Ntoroko will be no more after the Makerere University Council moved the decision to close it over low student enrollment and stiff competition from Mountains of the Moon and Uganda Pentecostal University.
Ritah Namisango, the Makerere University Public Relations Officer confirms to this website that the University council’s decision will not affect the continuing students who will be given an exception to finish up their courses and years at the campus.
