Government, Makerere University Council and the University administration today agreed to suspend the fees payment policy requiring students to have paid 60 percent of the tuition within the first six weeks of the semester, for it has clearly not worked, and has been at the heart of the unrest at the university.
“We have asked the University Council to start consultations to put in place new measures of collecting fees in a manner that is acceptable to all stakeholders,” the prime minister, Ruhakana Rugunda stated.
The new measures will be in place by the beginning of the next semester. The students representatives were contented with this decision. Samalie Eve the chair Lady Africa hall chanted after Rugunda’s speech saying “May God bless Rugunda.”
Government supports the University Council’s decision, based on the students’ request, that all fees due to the university be paid by the end of the 12th week of the current semester, to enable the smooth administration of examinations.
