Makerere University’s position in the academia of Africa and the world still remains an incomprehensible fact here in Uganda, more than across the borders. With or without your comprehension, the quality of research in this Harvard of Africa continues to grow and the ranks continue to hype every other day.
It has remained a matter of concern however that a lot of research done in Africa has only but remained on paper. That’s about to change. The College of Computer Science and Information Technology, Makerere in conjunction with Arizona State University, US held a 2 day workshop (1st – 2nd June) dubbed Computer Research as a Development Driver in which top academia from Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya and Canada came to work together on the inter- connectivity of data science research in East Africa.
“I never thought that Africa had a lot of innovative research until Matthew Harsh and Gregg Zachary who had been doing research in Uganda enlightened me. I got the shock of my life and knew the US needed to venture into this research.” Jameson Wetmore, a professor from Arizona State University exclaimed.
According to Dr. Mwebaze Ernest, Head Artificial Intelligence and Data science Lab Makerere, the workshop’s main objective is to compare research work and put it under more useful form to help not only the researchers but also society as a whole.
