Samuel Mugarura aka Falcao the inventor who creates a worldly accepted non-lethal weapon from scratch has been awarded a patent rights certificate by Uganda Registration Services Bureau.
Last year, this 3rd year Botany and chemistry student innovated a nontoxic prototype of teargas MS-23.
Mugarura’s research stretches way back to 2013 when he picked up a tear gas canister during a strike something that awakened his innovativeness using sugar, food colour, salt and other cheap ingredients.
After showcasing his research, he received a lot of intimidation and threats from security organs but he stood firm and wrote to the Prime Minister requesting for support.
At the beginning of this week, Mugarura’s innovation received a 10-year utility model formula No. UG/UC/2017/00002 to manufacture tear gas according to the Industrial Property act.
Mugarura’s main intention towards this was to provide cheaper and non-toxic teargas in substitution to the expensive imported toxic type currently used by the Uganda Police Forces. The sidebar goal was to also set up a manufacturing plant that would provide employment opportunities to the pack of unemployed youths roaming on Ugandan streets.
The innovation now awaits a license from any army or police general to flag off production. However, lots of challenges that include funding and lack of a workstation await this.
Congrats Samuel Mugarura upon taking this step. We wish you all the best.
