The latest info coming in confirms that Dr. John Kitayimbwa, who has been serving  as a senior don in the department of Mathematics at Makerere University has thrown in the towel following his new job at  Uganda Christian University (UCU).

Kitayimba will be serving as UCU’s Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Academic Affairs replacing Dr. Benon Musinguzi. Kitayimba announced his exit from Makerere on Tuesday evening during the Makerere University Retirement Benefits Scheme( MURBS) General Assembly that was held at the University’s Central Teaching Facility (CTF).

It should be recalled that Kitayimbwa has been a key player in the management of Makerere’s Shs 200 billion in the pension fund dubbed MURBS. In addition, he has been MURSBS’ representative for the academic staff association (MUASA) on the Board of Trustees.

Dr. Kitayimbwa personally announced on Tuesday that he was soon quitting Makerere and won’t be available to serve both as a Maths don as well MURBS’ representative on the Board of Trustees.

“But colleagues you don’t have to worry about this because I’m only going to be away but Makerere will always remain home,” Dr. Kitayimbwa announced.

More details indicate that Dr. Kitayimbwa competed with many other dons that responded when UCU published an advert calling for a suitable DVC.

Kitayimbwa added that his move from Makerere should not be taken negatively because it (Makerere) has always sacrificed its staff to smaller institutions in a bid to nature them.

“Because this University being the country’s premier academic institution has always been obliged to surrender some of its staff to help nurture other nascent institutions and this shouldn’t be taken in bad faith or as an act of competition by anyone.” Kitayimbwa said.

His departure left many of his colleagues heartbroken as they kept telling him how they will miss his presence at the Ivory Tower.

Dr. Kitayimbwa joins other officials that left Makerere for smaller institutions among which include; Prof Fred Kayanja who quit to start MUST, Prof Balunywa quit to establish MUBS, Busitema’s founding VC Prof Mary Okwakol had previously served at Makerere, the current Kyambogo VC Prof Elly Katunguka was at Makerere for decades, among many others.
