As the 68th Makerere University graduation went down and everyone gazed in awe at the MUBS girl who was just 0.05 points shy of the grand CGPA of 5.0, little was said of a certain Peterson Mwesiga who also graduated with a first class degree in Law.
On top of earning the coveted first class degree in Law that the School of Law at Makerere has missed since 2006 after the now celebrated scholar Dr. Kabumba Busingye had attained it, Mr. Mwesiga has a previous experience of a first class degree.
Described as ‘exceptional talent’ by the School of Law Principal Prof. Christopher Mbazira, Mr. Mwesiga has a previous first class degree in Engineering and is currently a phD candidate in the same.
“I rarely attend graduation parties, but I had to attend this one. One of my students, Peterson Mwesiga graduated with a first class Bachelor of Laws degree. Exceptional talent” Prof. Mbazira’s facebook revelation read in part.
The gentleman, who is also a part time lecturer at the College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT) has ended the over 10 year drought of first class degrees at Makerere.
Harold Ntale, who has been coursemates with him likened his mental prowess to Albert Einstein.
“Peterson is a miracle. Atleast he has proved to us that even in death, Einstein’s IQ still lives on”, Ntale said in a telephone interview.
As earlier said, his academic journey is still going on as he currently pursues a phD in Engineering.
Several students that we contacted at the School of Law, were literally lost for words. They could not imagine that it is possible to get a first class degree in the current setting.
“He is setting the bar high for us,” lamented Nicholas Byaruhanga a 3rd year student of Law as he cried foul.
Majority of the other students just sought an IQ test on the gentleman.
“I think it is normal to get a first class degree, but two first class degrees in two unrelated and extremely hard disciplines is unimaginable. Is he Lord Denning?” Benjamin Ahikiiriza, also a student of Law wondered.
(Lord Denning is the legendary British Supreme Court Justice who earlier attained a degree in Mathematics before he pursued Law.)
