Makerere University held its 72nd graduation ceremony last week and this is still the public talk of the day.
Unfortunately, its not all praise for the thousands of students that graduated at Makerere University this year.
There has been a public debate on whether Makerere University is breeding sluts or responsible citizens following the sense of fashion of some graduands that sent many murmuring.
A number of graduands at Makerere University’s 72nd graduation wore skimpy clothes that turned heads both in praise and disgust.
Dr Joyce Moriku, the State Minister for Primary Education condemned the indecent dress code manifested by graduands.
Dr Moriku said at Mbarara University’s 28th graduation last week that the indecency by graduands is intolerable and must be halted.
Like Dr Moriku, netizens and citizens have come out to express their worry over the skimpy dress code of graduands.
A question has been raised on whether Makerere University and other institutions of learning are grooming sluts or indecent citizens.
Uganda introduced the anti pornography act 2014 to bar women from dressing indecently. However, the act was not welcomed by women activists who said it infringes women rights.
The anti pornography law was annulled by court in August 2021. As of today, there’s no legal provision that limits women from going skimpy in public.
This, perhaps, has is the explanation for the increment of indecency among university students and the rest of the women in public.
It is public knowledge that indecent dressing is part and parcel of the fashion style by most university going students.
With indecent dressing on the rise, its not surprising that graduation ceremonies have lately turned into an exhibition of indecency.
