With the on going year-long centenary celebrations for the great Makerere University, today’s date is quite remarkable in the institution’s history.
According to a communication’s specialist from the great hill, Davidson Ndyabahika, it was on such a day of March 29th in 1966 that Makerere University College announced plans of becoming an independent institution.
Makerere University later became independent in 1970.
In the discussions between Uganda Kenya and Tanzania, it was agreed that Makerere, which became known as the the University College of East Africa in 1950 affiliated to the London University in England, would be in the near future become a fully-fledged and national university for Uganda.
In his 1964-1965 annual report, the Principal of Makerere University College, Mr. Yusuf Lule, had stated; “The College has entered discussions on the future of the role of the University of East Africa with an open mind.”
Makerere University is Uganda‘s largest and oldest institution of higher learning, first established as a technical school in 1922. It became an independent national university in 1970. Today, Makerere University is composed of nine colleges and one school offering programmes for about 36,000 undergraduates and 4,000 postgraduate.
U.S. News & World Report has ranked Makerere University as the eighth best university in Africa and the 569th best university worldwide. According to the 2020 U.S. News & World Report, Makerere is the highest-ranked university in sub-Saharan Africa outside of South Africa.
