Makerere University will mark a hundred years of existence this year 2022, and it prides in having shaped iconic figures overtime – Timothy Wangusa being one of those.
Professor Timothy Wangusa, who clocked 80, had his birthday and legacy celebrated by his alma mater Makerere University on Friday July 8th, 2022.
His literary works were hailed for nurturing many literature giants and branding Makerere University as a top breeder of academic excellence.
Austin Mwalimu Bukenya said Wangusa tirelessly strived to improve his art which he has kept on sharing with his readers, and that the best prize befitting him is a fight for the humanities.
“Professor Wangusa has striven the most part of his life to perfect his own ‘adili’ and to share it with his colleagues, students and readers. The best present we can give him is to fight for the value and validity of those human sciences.” Mwalimu said.
The acting Vice Chancellor, Associate Professor Umar Kakumba acknowledged that Wangusa is one of Uganda’s prolific writers whose work has sold Makerere University’s name allover the globe.
The novelist and poet, well known for his novel Upon this Mountain and his Psalms 23 poem, turned 80 on July 8th, 2022.
The event therefore was not only intended to celebrate his legacy as a literature guru but his life too.
Professor Timothy Wangusa is Makerere University’s first PhD graduate whose writing prowess has repeatedly wowed literature scholars.
At his 80th birthday, the iconic novelist and poet added four titles to his name and these are; I love you, you beast, Pathfinders’ footprints, Niyaanga Nelaliita and Lost in Wonder.
As part of the Makerere University at 100 celebrations, the institution is conducting pre-celebratory events with an intent of celebrating and honouring its outstanding alumni.
Makerere University will celebrate its centennial anniversary this year 2022 in October.
