Following the extension of Makerere University guild elections by Management, there has been a number of questions on when this year’s guild elections will be held. However Campus Bee has learned that the Makerere University Council held an emergency meeting yesterday 4th March to decide on the way forward.
During the meeting Chaired by Mrs. Lorna Magara, Council considered the report of the Legal, Rules and Privileges Committee on the matter of proposed amendments of the students’ guild elections and regulations.
A number of things were agreed upon in a bid to curb pressure of students who have been threatening to strike over delayed elections. Among the resolutions made by the council, it was agreed that final year students will not be allowed to run for any leadership position.
The council also decided that all intending candidates will be issued with certificates of academic standing by the academic registrar to confirm that the candidates indeed qualify to run.
It was also agreed that any candidate aspiring to run for the position of Guild President, GRC/Hall Chairperson and SCR will pay a nonrefundable nomination fee of UGX 200,000, UGX 80,000 and UGX 50,000 respectively to a designated university account.
The council decided that no rallies will be held in halls of residence and lecture rooms and the campaign period will run for only 10 calendar days.
According to Ezra Byakutangaza, the 85th guild speaker, the election process is likely to begin next week, Monday 9th March. He also communicated that the gazzeting process is expected to be concluded by tomorrow.
