Makerere University 89th guild president Maseruka Robert and the speaker Gozan Wilson Babinga are under fire over guild funds.
Makerere University 89th guild house sat last in June and failed to pass their budget due to disagreements over the guild budget seal. The seating turned chaotic and was adjourned to the following semester.
However, the speaker Babinga Gozan through the clerk Gillian Nahwera called for a budget session this week contrary to the earlier adjournment.
Some GRCs, especially those in the revolutionary government, have contested the move saying it is aimed at robbing students funds.
In a petition filed by Talent Akampulira, Johnmary Kayiira and Ssemanda Isaac, the trio argues that they cannot have a budget session during the holiday when most of them are doing internship. They further suggest that they should be facilitated to come and attend the session physically as opposed to online since it is allegedly hard to ascertain quorum online.
The trio’s petition was positively responded to by the tribunal. In the tribunal’s response seen by this publication, the speaker has been instructed not to proceed with the budget session.
The bee has also learnt that the speaker has defined the tribunal’s ruling and is set to proceed with the budget session.
According to Beston Mutambi (acting leader of Opposition), the last budget session was frustrated by disorganisation from the finance minister and that there is no need for a budget session during holidays. Beston has urged his fellow GRCs not to turn up for the planned session.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, one of the GRCs told the Bee that the speaker has connived with the guild president and called for an online session so that they easily pass their budgets. The source says these intend to implant ghost attendees in order to get the required quorum.
Makerere University guild is allocated 328 million annually. During the previous seating, the guild Maseruka Robert said they want to increase this amount to at least a billion.
