The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kale Kayihura, has promised to award the Architectural School of Makerere with a contract to design the perimeter wall for the Police Head Quarters.
while speaking at the Makerere Guild Workshop where he was invited as the guest of honour, kayihura said police has good relations with students of Makerere University before pledging to work with the guild leadership and support their plan to construct a perimeter wall around the institution.
During the event took place from the main hall, Sarah Kagingo, the former Guild President of the university also made presentations from the Operation Wealth Creation group where she is a member. The presentations rotated around the Art of Financial Freedom.
The Guild President, Roy Ssembogga, who gave the welcoming remarks praised Kayihura for always intervening in matters pertaining the institution with the most recent being his intervention in the suspension of about 15 students for demonstrating.
“The IGP has been with us in all our struggles. He brought the unfair 60% tuition policy matter before the Prime Minister and as I talk now, it is now history,” Ssembogga remarked.
Ssemboga also detailed Makerere challenges to Kayihura that included lack of a perimeter wall, constant sit down strikes by the staff due to poor funding, unused resources like the vast land that the University owns and it is not put to use, and several other challenges.
For his part, the Kayihura thanked the guild leadership for their input and commended the Makerere Police for the discipline they displayed in the most recent strike where not a single canister of teargas was released by the Force and still violence was contained by buffers.
“I am definitely an ally of this university. I was a student here and therefore have a special attachment with the institution. It is therefore my mission that whatever we do, we don’t disorganize your studies,” Kayihura revealed.
The Guild awarded plaques to the Makerere Head of Security Josephat Muchunguzi, Gen. Salim Saleh the head of Operation Wealth Creation and the IGP himself.
