The State Minister for Higher Education John Chrysostom Muyingo has said that Makerere University’s re-opening is being delayed by the lecturers and that if they agree to go back to lecture rooms and teach, the university would be opened immediately.
He said that government is doing its role after setting up a Committee of inquiry into Makerere problems and that it is the management and lecturers that are failing the institution.
According to him, if they (lecturers) can agree to start teaching and assure government on that – the institution would start operations there and then.
He further admitted that it is government that advised the University Council against dancing to the lecturers tunes and paying to them their incentives.
“Government increased lecturer’s salaries from 2M to 8M and gradually a professor will be getting upto 15M in salaries,” he said.
He added that government cannot pay them their salaries and also add on the incentives which are supposed to be internally generated.
However, Makerere University Academic Staff Association Chairman Dr. Muhammed Kiggundu maintains that they can only go back to teach if they receive an assurance that their money will be paid.
He said government should take up its workers’ entire wage bill and stop blame games.
