The effects of the closure of Makerere University are going from bad to worse everyday. Custodians of randomly selected hostels around the third-best institution in Africa say that the semester that was paid for in late August 2016, strictly ends on December 19 2016, whether the campus is open or not.
Accordingly, therefore, any date beyond that will, custodians say, attract fresh payments even though police ordered students to vacate halls of residence and hostels the day the university was closed.
Kagugube based Nana Hostel, for instance, issued a communique to all their clients, alerting them that their accommodation fee expires on December 19 as indicated on their Identity Cards. They further warned that any day beyond that shall attract an extra charge of Shs 10,000 and Shs 15,000 per day for double and single rooms respectively.
The other hostels that have confirmed charging rent afresh if the semester resumes after December 17 include Aryan that is based in Kikoni and has a branch in Wandegeya, JB Girls’ and mixed in Wandegeya, Kefrenc in Kikumi Kikumi. For those who remained in Kann, management asked them to pay for their own electricity.
A similar instace could apply to other hostels like Nakiyingi in Kikoni where the custodians said they will soon communicate their stand.
However, custodians of other hostels like Olympia, Muhika, Kann, Pinto’s Girls’ say that when the university reopens, they will let students continue and finish the semseter without charging them afresh, because they asked students to leave the day campus was indefinitely shut.
Margaret, the manager of Pearl View Hostel also in Kagugube, also said that when the campus opens, they will be considerate to students.
“Our clients won’t be paying for the remainder of this semster,” she confirmed.
All in all, every hostel that followed the Police directive to vacate Makerere students will at least have a compensation policy for their clients.
