The announcement of the closure of Makerere University Library on Friday, April 19, 2024, has sparked controversy among students, eliciting cynical reactions to the visit of the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Maama Janet Museveni.
While the launch of the digitization of students’ records at Freedom Square is hailed as a step towards modernization and efficiency, the decision to close the library for the event has left many students disgruntled.
According to a memo by the library management, the premises will be inaccessible for the whole of today due to close proximity with the Freedom Square.
Normal operations are slated to resume on Saturday, April 20, 2024.
Some students have expressed frustration over the disruption of their study schedules, with exams around the corner, lamenting the inconvenience caused by the closure of a vital academic resource.
“It’s ironic that the digitization of records, meant to enhance accessibility, is resulting in the closure of the very place where students access information,” remarked one student, echoing the sentiments of many.
Others have questioned the prioritization of ceremonial events over academic pursuits, highlighting the disconnect between administrative decisions and student welfare.
“Closing the library for a single event may seem trivial, but it reflects broader issues of mismanagement and misplaced priorities within the university,” opined another student.
While the visit of the First Lady is an opportunity to showcase the university’s achievements and initiatives, students believe that such events should not come at the expense of their educational pursuits.
