Makerere University’s relentless efforts to support financially struggling students have culminated in the establishment of a dedicated office for the Students Work Scheme.
This move follows the recent announcement by the 90th Guild President, Lubega Vincent Nsamba, about the operationalization of the Students Work Scheme, aimed at providing part-time employment opportunities for students.
The new office, located in Senate Building, Room 209, will serve as the central hub for coordinating and managing the various job placements under the scheme.
It will ensure that the program runs smoothly and sustainably, addressing the needs of students who require financial assistance to continue their education.
The Students Work Scheme is designed to create part-time employment opportunities within the university and with external organizations. These positions are particularly targeted at financially struggling students, especially those on private admission.
The initial phase of the scheme has secured 24 part-time jobs, including positions for promoters, sales representatives, data specialists, public relations specialists, administrators, and an assistant manager.
The office will work closely with the Chairpersons of Colleges to identify at least two needy students per college for these roles, ensuring gender balance and inclusivity. Four slots are specifically reserved for students with special needs, upholding the principle of support for all students in need.
