In a report submitted to Makerere University’s Vice Chancellor Professor Barnabas Nawangwe on 25th June 2018, the five member committee tasked to investigate the increasing rate of sexual harassment at Makerere University highlighted a number of issues, causes as well as solutions to this growing vice.
According to chapter 4.2 of the report, three young females who work with Kenya Airport Parking Services (KAPS) reported cases of sexual abuse by a Directorate of ICT Support (DICTS) male staff member to the Estates and Works Department (EWD) of the university, which directly supervises KAPS work. These female employees alleged that the DICTS employees persistently made sexual advances on them.
When they rejected his sexual advances, he wrote incriminating reports about them, and falsely accused them of taking bribes at the University’s automated gate stations. They also added that many young women at Makerere University had lost their jobs in that same way.
KAPS is a service provider which was contracted by Makerere University to manage its automated vehicle control and parking services on campus.
Apparently the MAK Directorate of ICT Support is yet to institute a committee to investigate the matter.
