Makerere University has been ranked 19th among Africa’s best universities, and second in East Africa according the new rankings released by Webometrics on Tuesday, January 30.
Compared to the previous rankings, this is a decline for Makerere University. The institution dropped from 13th in 2022 to 17th in 2023 and now 19th. The institution now sits at 1088th position globally. It comes second to University of Nairobi at the East African level.
Kampala International University (KIU) and Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) have come in second and third positions respectively in Uganda, followed by Kyambogo and Gulu Universities.
On the continental level, KIU is placed 46th, MUST is placed at 108th, Kyambogo at 188th and Gulu university stands at 198th position.
Important to note; KIU has climbed by 15 places, placing it 3rd in East Africa whereas Kyambogo has climbed by one position drawing from the previous rankings released mid last year..
KIU has been the second best university in Uganda for the last 3 years.
The Webometrics survey evaluated over 11,900 universities worldwide based on their excellence, openness, and impact among other aspects.
Webometrics, also known as The Ranking Web, is the largest academic ranking of Higher Education Institutions offering every six months an independent, objective, free, open scientific exercise for providing reliable, multidimensional, updated and useful information about the performance of universities from all over the world.
