The disciplinary committee of the University Football League (UFL), sitting on 14th October and after evaluating claims in the case of fans’ hooliganism at a UFL match (Busitema University vs Makerere University) has decided to suspend Makerere University from the league for two consecutive seasons and slapped a cash fine of shs. 500,000 on top of another possible shs. 5M.
In a written statement, after evaluating claims and reports by match officials and the Busitema University Ag. Sports Tutor regarding the match between these two universities, the committee (that is led by Bernard Bainamani Bampaire) reached that decision.
Apparently, just before kickoff on the fateful day, Makerere fans invaded the Busitema dining hall “shouting and using abusive language” and forcefully ate
food of Busitema students in the dining, broke plates and went away with some food.
It is further alleged that most of the fans were totally drunk and consequently very violent. The destroyed plates
belonged to Rinnus Company Ltd (a catering service firm) which now claims over shs. 5M worth of property was destroyed by this conduct. When Busitema students tried to comfront them, violence ensued and in the process, two Makerere students were arrested by Police but later released.
The league claims that these never ending actions of Makerere fans have brought UFL into disrepute and they blame the Makerere University administration for failing to control the conduct of their fans that were found responsible for the eventual abandonment of the match.
And that because Makerere’s conduct has refused to change after numerous pardons, action had to be taken.
The university was consequently fined Shs 500,000 for breach of league rules and expelled from UFL for the remaining part of this season and the whole of next season.
It is upto them to apply for re-admission after the expiry of the expulsion period.
However, the league has reserved them a right of appeal if they are not satisfied with the decision of the disciplinary committee as regards the matter.
